Steve Peat has failed to clinch a straight 9th victory in the iconic Lisboa DownTown race in Portugal last weekend, the win instead going to Paulo Domingues.
The slippery pavements raised the bar even further at the Nissan Downtown Lisbon, allowing plenty of surprises, but none more so than the first Portuguese winning this unique race in its 11 year history.
All eyes were naturally on Steve Peat to romp to victory, but it wasn’t to be. Peat, riding his new Santa Cruz V10 Carbon, slipped out on the last corner, eventually finishing in a lowly 23rd.
Paulo was evidently pretty estatic with his result, saying: “I still can not believe that I beat the best athletes of the world, I’m still incredulous! I actually came here to fight for the title of the best Portuguese rider and leave the place by the big door, it seems like a dream. I feel so happy, because I am an amateur and they are professional.”
Organiser Fernando Figueiredo commented on the terrible conditions: “The bad weather complicates everything and we had to change the program, but most important is that we went ahead, despite the falls did no record of serious injury among athletes. Furthermore, I highlight the significant presence of the public – that even with an umbrella in hand did not move. ”
