New SRAM Type 2 derailleur eliminates chain slap – first look

It was only a matter of time. Following the release of Shimano’s revolutionary Shadow plus technology, first revealed on its XTR line, we were inundated with questions asking if SRAM was going to do something similar.

Those questions have now been answered, as today the US company officially revealed their Type 2  rear derailleur, which will be initially available on XO and X9 mechs.

What is Type 2? (and why the odd name SRAM?) Rear derailleur bounce and chain slap is all but eliminated due to SRAM’s Roller Bearing Clutch technology, which basically means inside the mech is contained a one-way roller clutch. This prevents the mech flapping back and forth over rough ground, something which usually leads to the chain falling off, or just a very noisy ride as it punishes the chainstays.

With a press of a button the system is released, allowing the rear wheel to be easily removed. Needle bearings are self lubricated to keep action smooth all the time. As for shifting action itself, it’s described as ‘consistent’, how it differs to a regular shifter remains to be seen. Shimano’s design results in a noticeably heavier shift at the lever paddle, not a problem in itself.

Type 2 rear derailleurs will be available in August 2012. No prices yet.
