Cycle 2009: British steel

Enigma is best known for its titanium frames, but for 2010 it will also be offering this super-smooth fillet brazed steel MTB. It’s built in the UK from Columbus Life tubing and full custom options will be available.

Also getting in on the fillet brazed act is Pace. This is the 853-tubed 104 in “Morris 1000 blue”, featuring sliding dropouts, chromed chainstay and 100-130mm fork compatibility. 104 frames are £575. Pace has other new bikes too – look out for those in a separate story.

Want more fillet brazing? Southampton framebuilder Demon was showing this dirt jump frame with old-school lugged head tube and fillets everywhere else. It’s an interesting mix of traditional construction and modern bike. At up to £900 for a frame, though, it doesn’t come cheap.

Cotic’s Kate Potter will be racing cyclocross on the new X. Built from 853 Pro Team tubing, the frame comes in at 3.7lb. There are plenty of familiar Cotic touches like the wishbone rear end, various gussets and socket dropouts. You won’t be able to get one for this season, though – Kate has two race bikes and that’s all the Xs that exist right now. Watch out for it coming on sale in time for winter 2010, though. There’s more new stuff from Cotic, too, which we’ll cover in a separate story.

The National Cycle Collection stand was one of our favourites of the show. The Wales-based bike museum had a selection of its 200-strong collection of vintage bikes on display, including this replica of the 1817 von Drais hobbyhorse from which all bicycles sprang. It doesn’t get any more retro than this…
