Sugoi Gustov Shorts Review

The Gustov baggy shorts from Canadian firm Sugoi look really good, are just the right length, the material is durable and hard-wearing, and the integrated padded liner keeps you comfortable on the saddle. They’re pricey, but they work hard to justify that price tag.

Sugoi Gustov shorts.

The shorts are made from a lightweight rip-stop fabric, with sturdy double stitched seams and a good length, sitting nicely over the knee. They’re comfortable when pedalling, the light fabric and the level of bagginess ensuring they move out of the way as the knee rises and falls through the pedal stroke. They’re on the long side and sit happily over a pair of knee pads, making them ideal for enduro and aggressive trail riding.

They’re a really well thought out pair of baggy shorts, with good attention to detail. For example there’s a seamless crotch gusset, which improves comfort and minimises saddle hooking, handy on the steeper descents. There are vents on the front panels with a mesh pleat behind to offer some cooling air, which is of dubious benefit.

You get two front pockets, so you have somewhere to stash your spare hand when you’re raising a pint of beer to your lips post-ride. There are two extra pockets around the back as well, but if you use a hydration pack they’re of limited use. They are there if you need them though.

Sizing and fit is good, the medium fitting my 30in waist comfortably. There are two Velcro adjusters in the waistband to adjust the fit, with enough range to get the fit just right. There are also belt loops if you want to wear a belt to keep them in place, but I didn’t find any issue with them staying comfortably in place.

Inside the shorts is attached a lightweight liner short with a RC Pro padded insert. It’s a very comfortable pad, with the nylon quick-dry top surface finish ensuring even when it’s roasting hot you don’t get all sweaty down there. It’s anatomically shaped and fits very well, in fact you hardly even notice it’s there after a well. There’s just enough padding that it provides comfort for the long rides, without the bulk of some padded shorts that make it feel like you’re wearing a nappy.

The padded liner proved very comfortable.

They’re a well made and nicely designed pair of baggy shorts, with good length and bagginess that makes them ideal for wearing with knee pads. The padded liner is high quality, but it can be removed if you’d prefer to partner the shorts with your own padded shorts.

Verdict

Hard-working, feature-packed and stylish baggy shorts.
