Your contact points are your relationship with the bike. Getting them dialled is obviously something you want to invest time into. Not only do you want to be as comfortable as possible, because any discomfort can lead to a very unhappy rider, but getting the optimum setup can lead to improved performance.
Of the contact points, is your feet that are asked so much of. They’re expected to do their thing in the most inhospitable conditions: changes in temperature, getting soaked in axle deep puddles, smashed against rocks, the pressure from pushing hard on the pedals for 24-hours, it all takes its toll. Poor feet.
It’s no wonder we hear more complaints about sore feet than any other part of the body. Which explains why custom shoe inserts have become popular over the years. They can be pricey though, so what if you could get an off-the-shelf option that promised to provide better support for your feet, iron out any problems you might have, and still leave you change from fifty notes?
That’s where SOLE Footbeds comes in. The company offers a range of affordable footbeds that will fit any shoes. Using heat or wear mouldable footbeds can reduce the pressure that occurs, eliminating the inward twisting on the knee and ankle when cycling, which consequently reduces pain and discomfort in the knees and hips. The feet and ankles are stabilised with the custom footbeds for better leg alignment, which creates a more efficient pedal stroke. Greater efficiency leads to increased power, meaning you can pedal faster. And who doesn’t want to go faster.
They’ve been given the thumbs up by the legendary Nick Craig, who tells us: “I can ride all day on and off road, and I am 100% convinced that these footbeds allow me to deliver power to my pedals…I will not ride without them.” He sounds convinced, and we’ll find out if they work wonders for us too, we’ve got some to play with.
The company is branching out also, with the addition of Sport Flips, lightweight flip flops that continue SOLE’s ethos off the bike.
A deep heel cup, dynamic arch support, metatarsal support pad, hidden toe ridge and midsole support should make them the most comfort flip flops you’ve ever worn. An advocate of them is Tracy Moseley, who says: “The flip flops allow me to look good in the pits whilst supporting my feet and helping me recover for the next race.”
