The POC Trail Shorts are good fitting and smart looking baggy shorts, but they’re costly
Price: £75
What they say: The Trail shorts are made of a two-way-stretch nylon – spandex mix which are highly functional for trail riding. Added versatility is included with two front pockets, a zip pocket on the left leg and reflective prints on the rear for improved visibility.
What it is: For the majority of mountain bikers, baggy shorts are essential and part of the ‘uniform’ of the sport. Few brands offer such good looking and stylish clothing, but thankfully these Trail Shorts from Swedish company POC have the performance to back up their looks.
They’re made from a two-way stretch material, with just enough stretch to ensure a good fit around the waist and not impede pedalling over the top of the legs. You get a couple of pockets, two on the front, ideal for sticking your hands in when waiting around in the car park for everyone else to get ready, and a zipped pocket on the left leg.
The shorts are a good fit, with the length judged just right so they sit just over the knee cap – they’ll sit well with knee pads if you’re armouring up. The size I tested stayed in place with no slippage evident, but there’s no way to adjust the waistband, other than using the belt loops if you need to tighten them up. It would be nice to see some sort of adjustment considering the high price.
Durability is good, the material manages to be lightweight yet tough enough to withstand some abuse. I’ve been wearing a previous version of this short for the last three years and they’re still going strong.
The Trail Shorts are available in sizes from 28 to 38in and two colours, Boron blue and Berkelium green.
Who it’s good for: If you like your baggy shorts light and well fitted, these POC Trail Shorts are a good pick, but they’re an expensive investment and there’s no waist adjustment.
