Our theme this month has been ‘pushing your limits’ and with that in mind we’re off to take part in the fearsome Megavalanche next week.
There’s several ‘key’ products that one needs for the event – and for a week in the French Alps – with one of them being an adjustable seatpost. Strictly speaking you can get away without one, but it’s far more convenient. The DSP Bighorn has just landed on the editorial desk this week and we’ll be whisking it away to the Alps with us to try out.
DSP, or Diverse Suspension to give them their full name, also make a range of shocks and customised fork cartridges. The Bighorn adjustable seatpost comes in 30.9 and 31.6mm sizes with 4.5in of height adjustment. Those with a 27.2mm frame are in luck as it’s one of the few seatposts that will fit, though you’ll have to make do with just 3in of travel, rather than the full 4.5in of the fatter posts. Still, that’s not bad.
Out of the smart packaging the DSP looks good, with a very nice machined finish and a good level of attention to detail. The height markers on the main shaft will make it easy to set-up in the bike, and handy if you have to take the post out for any reason and want to put it back in its original position.
A remote version is available, with a smart lever actuating the post via a gear cable. The clamp is a single bolt design and offers loads of adjustment. There’s a small return spring under the lever that actuates the mechanism to lower or raise the post, which should help the remote lever work even when conditions get filthy, by keeping the tension high.
What’s more, the price is pretty good, at £175 with a remote. That’s significantly less than the market leader – the £275 RockShox Reverb – and about the same as the Giant Contact Switch we tested earlier this year. Weight is 630g.
