Your guide to mountain bike front mudguards
Crud Catcher £9.99
The Crud Catcher has come a long way since early experiments with cut-down Coke bottles and zipties. Amazingly (and not a little alarmingly) it’s 18 years since the Crud Catcher first emerged from the mind and shed of Pete Tomkins.
Yet the Crud Catcher has continued to be updated, and survives as the brand synonymous with keeping mud out of mountain bikers eyes around the country for the best part of the last two decades.
The latest version uses a tapered curved shape, wider at the front, with a front edge made from a softer plastic so it deforms around fork crowns, and a soft frame pad is moulded to the top surface to protect the frame. O-rings keep it in place.
CycraGuard front mudguard £8.99
The CycraGuard front mudguard uses a dual compound spine, tip and tail so the mudguard sits securely on the frame with no chance the paint on your frame being scuffed or scratched.
Wedges and specially engineered cable channels allows the front MTB guard to fit bikes with awkward downtube cable stops, downtube cable routing or bikes with crossed cables.
Topeak DeFender FX
A lightweight design with an easy to use quick release attaches this full-length mudguard to the fork.
A generous length and dropped sides means this mudguard offers loads more coverage than something like the minimal Crud Catcher, with the front section ensuring mud flicked up off the front wheel doesn’t make it into your eyes.

SKS Dashboard £11.99
Another full-length mudguard, this lightweight mudguard is compatible with most suspension and rigid forks; an adapter is available for Cannondale’s Headshock.
RapidRacerProducts NeoGuard
Not really a mudguard but proving very popular in the past couple of years, the RRP NeoGuard is essentially a flap of neoprene that prevents mud spraying off the front wheel into your face.
It has the benefit of being lighter than a mudguard, is easy to fit and is available to fit all suspension forks.
THE Pro DH Fender £22.99
Inspired by motocross fenders and made from a flexible, vacuum-formed, polycarbonate so it’s light and strong, the THE Pro DH fender is designed for downhill applications.
A wider design than most ensures excellent mud stopping performance measuring 4in at its widest. A universal fork mount makes installation a doddle and it comes off quickly when it’s not needed too.
