For most people cleaning the mountain bike probably isn’t top of the list of fun jobs, but you can’t beat the satisfaction that comes from restoring a bike from a muddy clump to a sparkling showroom glean. If there is one part of the bike that is a pain to clean, it’s the drivetrain.
That’s where a cleaner like Muc-Off’s Bio Chain Cleaner comes into its own. It makes short work of the most stubborn dirt and eats through all crud attached to the chain.
The directions insist the can is shaken vigorously and then sprayed over the chain and transmission, and then washed off with clean water. Couldn’t be simpler really. I found a decent bit of elbow grease with a stiff brush is really required to lift the encrusted dirt off the chain, and particularly the cassette.
After a couple of applications on my bike after a muddy ride the day before, with the dirt properly dried onto the transmission, I soon had the chain and cassette gleaming. The optional Chain Doc might make lighter work of the chain, but a good brush produced pretty good results.
With a good stiff brush and a couple of applications the Bio Chain Cleaner is an effective chain and cassette cleaner and it is fully biodegradable.
