Reflex Films is a newish name on the MTB video production scene, and Anti Gravity is its first offering. We’ll get this out of the way first – if you’ve already seen 4130’s Earthed you may experience a hint of déjà vu. This is somewhat inevitable as there’s only a limited supply of UK DH/4X/etc events, and of course it cuts both ways – if you watch Antigravity and then Earthed you’ll experience a similar effect.
You can probably guess a lot of the content from that – Fort William World Cup, Plymouth Dirty Weekend, various DH and 4X NPS rounds, The Bike Show and all that stuff. In between it all are rider sections. Reflex had a hook-up with MBUK to make this film, so you can expect a lot of Chris Smith, Garry Penman, Grant Fielder, Jim Davage et al. Nothing much wrong with that, they’re all damn good riders, although we’ve come to the inescapable conclusion that you can, in fact, see too much of Chris Smith.
You’re also getting footage from various MBUK freeridey photoshoots. Some of this works well, but some of it manages to demonstrate that what looks good in pictures doesn’t necessarily look quite as good on film.
There’s a lot of it, at 54 minutes, but while there’s some very slick editing and visuals going on we couldn’t help thinking that we’d have enjoyed it more had it been 40-45 minutes long. We’ve got the attention span of a goldfish with ADHD, though.
Positives: Mellow soundtrack, tidy editing, some imaginative angles
Negatives: A tad repetitious in places, photoshoots don’t necessarily make good video shoots
Verdict
Antigravity’s a damn good first effort. It suffers in comparison to Earthed, and the price seems a little high compared to stuff from the bigger video franchises out there, but there’s a lot to like here. We look forward to more stuff from Reflex in the future
