- Specialized BG Pro Bib Shorts
- £94.99
- Sizes: S, M, L, XL and XXL
Specialized are applying their unique Body Geometry technology to just about everything. The latest to receive BG attention is these bib shorts. Bib shorts are great as they allow a permanent bottom/chamois/pad/saddle interface, so they don’t slip and chafe like standard shorts can do, and the fit is much more comfortable than standard shorts.
It’s when you get in close to the Chamois (we don’t recommend this after you’ve been riding) when the BG becomes apparent. The designers have moulded and sculptured the high density foam to provide relief at the key pressure points while the lower pressure areas have slimmer foam. It all adds up to provide a great fit and a high level of comfort. There’s no doubt that these are intended to be used with BG saddles and we’ve tried the Rival and Alias on several test bikes and the match is perfect.
For the lyrca Fieldsensor fabric, which uses a proprietary knitting technique to achieve a high level of sweat wicking, is used. It works by fine yarns on the outside sucking through moisture from the larger yarns on the inside. It all sounded good in theory and in practice it works well too. We’ve had this pair through summer and winter in 24 hour races [Dave says he didn’t take them off! – ed], riding to work and every ride in between, and only now are they just starting to show signs of wear on the inside of the legs. The chamois pad is perfectly intact though.
They look good too. The black with red highlights is going to match most outfits and a swooping seam along the sides of the legs is comfortable and flattering. And you don’t have to worry about the shorts slipping up as silicone leg grippers prevent them moving around.
Positives: We never take them off, very durable, chamois maintains shape even after 1000s of miles
Negatives: Expensive, at nearly £100
Verdict
Whilst they’re priced up there with Assos, Pearl Izumi and Rapha these shorts are a match in quality and function. The Body Geometry system is very well thought out – it’s not just hype – and the rider/bike interface that Specialized have come up with certainly improves comfort. After nearly a year of constant wearing they’re only just showing signs of wear.
