There was a hell of a lot of carbon fibre in the Eurobike halls, with pretty much everybody touting carbon FS and hardtail bikes. A lot of them were achingly generic and most of them were about the same weight – lots of 10kg FS bikes and 9.5kg hardtails. A few companies, though, had definitely pushed the envelope. And one had actually burnt it, sticky flap and all. We’ll remind you of a couple of notably light bikes that you’ve already seen and then move on to the really light stuff…

Cannondale’s Scalpel Carbon put a fair few noses out of joint – plenty of manufacturers were very proud of their sub-10kg FS bikes until the 8.25kg (18.2lb) Scalpel appeared. And it’s a production bike…

Simplon’s rigid Razorblade made the early light-bike running at 7.5kg (16.5lb) complete.

As if the stock Scott Scale LTD wasn’t light enough, it put together a one-off for the show that weighed in at an impressive 6.7kg (14.7lb) without resorting to a rigid fork.

Storck

The unholy alliance of Germany’s Storck Bicycles and the UK’s Poshbikes.com came up with a brace of amazingly light show one-offs. They’re clearly not standard bikes in any way at all, but Poshbikes would certainly build you an example of either, if you had a lot of money. This is a 120mm travel front and rear Organic that weighs, er, 7kg (15.4lb).

Most carbon stems are moulded. Not this one – it’s hand-laid just like the frame.

If the Organic’s not light enough for you, how about this truly remarkable Rebelion? Storck’s own Rebel carbon fork and a range of other ultralight toys makes it Eurobike’s clear low-mass champion at a scarcely-credible 5.7kg (12.5lb).

Carbon fibre brake rotors apparently work fine but tend to heat up quite quickly.
