Fans of 29in wheels wanting to go tubeless on their monster hoops have, until now, had to go with one or the other conversion kits doing the rounds. But now Hutchinson has launched the first UST-certified 29in tyre in the shape of its Python 29er Tubeless Ready.
The French tyre manufacturer has always worked closely with Mavic, and was among the very first to roll out 26in tubeless tyres. The 29er UST treads are also the result of a partnership with Mavic, with the big Python being displayed for the first time at Sea Otter earlier this year alongside Mavic’s C29ssMax (we think that that’s meant to look a bit like “CrossMax” if you squint a lot, and possibly take some drugs too) wheelset.
Things weren’t a fully finished product at that point, though. But now all the testing has been done and Hutchinson has started Python 29er production. The Python has been quite a popular tyre on 26in bikes, with the small tread blocks and high-volume casing delivering a fast yet controlled ride in the right conditions.
Hutchinson is labelling the Python 29er as Tubeless Ready – it’s got UST-spec locking beads but doesn’t have an airtight butyl layer on the inside of the casing, so you’ll need to use a latex sealant to keep the air in. That adds a bit of faff, but you can be confident that they’ll stay on the rim, and doing without the butyl cuts the weight – claimed heft is 645g for the 127tpi, 2.1in tyre.
They’ll be in shops in January – UK pricing is to be announced.
