First spotted on Steve Peat’s Santa Cruz V10, the new Crud Fast Fender is a moto-style mudguard designed to eliminate the water and mud that gets flipped up off the front wheel.
The Crud Fast Fender attaches not to the bottom of the steerer tube like many other designs that have done the rounds, but instead Crud has taken the novel approach to attach it to the handlebars, making it both easy to setup and compatible with most frame/fork setups. The Fast Fender can also be used to mount race numbers. It weighs just 68g.
The turn-around has been short for this product, as Pete Tomkins fills us in on the arrival of this latest product: “Since the late nineties, I have been toying with the idea of a proper motocross-style mudguard. With all the different fork styles out there, I have never really seriously thought it possible to make a truly universal, easy-to-fit, reliable product that you could trust, so I didn’t bother to make one.”
“This idea came to me only three months ago. I suddenly realised that all mountain bikes have nearly the same distance between handlebars and fork crown. I remember from the seventies that some motocross fenders were supported by a similar attachment from the handlebars, and the idea was born.”
“I gave my son Jamie the brief – hangs off the handlebars, looks good, works in conjunction with a Crud Catcher, and three days later he came back with the basic design. We went and showed the first prototype to Steve [Peat], who suggested some improvements, and within a few weeks we had finalised the design. We ordered the tool a month ago, and it was finished in time for Bikeradar Live.”
