There are lots of charity fund-raising rides on the road from London to Paris, but the British Heart Foundation’s off-road London to Paris is unique. Next year’s edition is open for entries and runs from Saturday June 29 to Tuesday July 2, 2013.
The BHF London to Paris Off-Road Bike Ride starts at Kempton Park Racecourse in Surrey and finishes at the Palace of Versailles, just west of the French capital. Entry fee is just £99, which gets you a fully signed route, Eurotunnel or ferry crossing and end of ride dinner.
The first day covers over 100km of mostly well surfaced, flat trails until the final climb to the South Downs. That’s followed by a fast descent to Shoreham Harbour ad then travel over to France.
The second days consists of 80km of mixed terrain through Forges les Eaux to the final climb into the medieval town of Lyons la Forret.
The final day is the big one with 120km of trails to the Palace of Versailles.
Of necessity, on-road London to Paris rides are very regimented, with organised sub-groups and food stops to make sure everyone gets there safely.
The BHF London to Paris Off Road ride is far more freestyle. You put together your own team, including a support vehicle and driver, and you can choose to do the whole way or ride it as a relay with friends colleagues or other team-mates. BHF can help you find accommodation, so you can tailor that aspect to your budget, from campsites to five star hotels.
Riders are asked to raise a minimum of £500 in sponsorship.
