Kona Mash-Up report

400 riders enjoy a muddy Mash-Up

Over 400 competitors made their way to the 3rd Kona Mash-Up and joined the relaxed atmosphere mixed in with rather wet weather conditions on the trails surrounding the Glyncorrwg Mountain Bike Centre in Afan Forest.

The event was contrary to the sun spoiled June event exposed to almost horizontal rain which tested man and machine. However it did not have an impact on the riders joining the fun and testing their ability and the trails around the Mountain Bike Centre.

The Kona Mash-Up used the Whites Level and the July Trail (beginning and end of the Skyline trail) to create two courses. The Whites Level course was used by the technical category who had the chance to spend quite a few hours doing re-runs of the action packed Black Run as well as chill out and exchange tactics at the event village at the top of Windy Point (top of the climb). The endurance riders had more distance to cover and were also timed on a climb rather than just the single track and DH sections.

The rather challenging weather conditions made chilling out at the top of the mountain less enjoyable but the extensive easy-up village equipped with heaters and cold and hot drinks as well as a small Drop Off Café setup gave riders the chance to gather their strength as well as to discuss tactics before heading out to do the next timed section.

The Technical and the Enduro category saw lots of leading riders returning and in particular Rowan Sorrell from Orange / Royal repeating last year’s success. We also saw Ryan Bevis returning who after a 3rd position in the Endurance category in the June event entered the technical category to finish in a very impressive 4th position – just 44 seconds off the pace.
