Destination: Dalby Forest, Yorkshire
Dalby certainly has a lot going for it and, having hosted a round of the UCI World Cup in 2011, trails to test the best cross-country riders in the world. It covers a vast area so don’t let the crowds around the visitor centre bother you and head off into the woods for some great muddy fun.
How to get there
From Pickering, follow the A169 north towards Whitby, turning right just before the Fox and Rabbit Pub onto the Thornton-le-Dale road. The Forest Drive is on your left after a short way.
Sat Nav: YO18 7LT
Facilities
As well as a decent cafe, toilets and on-site bike shop, there’s plenty of stuff for non-bikers too including a Go-Ape high wire course and an adventure playground.
Trails
Starting off, you’ve got two family orientated green trails which, unless you’re planning on towing a tagalong, won’t be of interest.
The 13km blue trail is a step up with some tight turns and steep sections but there’s nothing technical and it’s suitable for novices. At 37km the red trail is a long old ride and, without much of it being technical or steep, you’re in for a lot of pedaling. The surface has suffered over the last couple of winters but it’s still a decent spin out for the XC-minded.
Unfortunately, the 6km short but sweet black World Cup trail is currently closed for repair so call ahead if you’re wanting to ride this. For those of you who prefer more air and gravity action, head for the Pace Bike Park at Dixon’s Hollow.
