The French town of Val d’Isere plays host to the final round of the cross-country mountain bike World Cup this weekend, July 28-29. It’s a new venue for the World Cup circuit, but as one of the world’s top ski resorts, Val d’Isere is no stranger to hosting big events, so it should be a good ’un.

It’s also the last hit-out for the riders before they head to London and the Olympic mountain bike races at Hadleigh Farm on August 11 and 12.

The elite men’s race on Saturday July 28 is expected to be a serious battle, as the top two in the series after six rounds are separated by just 12 points. Switzerland’s Nino Schurter (Scott-Swisspower) leads the series on 950 points, but South African Burry Stander (Specialized) has 938 and looks to be in strong form after winning the Windham round. There’s 250 point for a win and 200 for second, so this one’s down to the wire.

In the women’s series, Canadian Catherine Prendel’s 1190 points gives her an unassailable lead over Luna team-mate Katerina Nash of the Czech Republic on 859.
