Electron have more than doubled the output of their most powerful light after unveiling the Terra 3 at Madison’s iceBike trade show.
The Terra 3 pumps out 800 Lumens and takes over from the Terra 2, which had an output of 360 Lumens from two light units, at the top of electron’s range.
The Terra 2 was powered by a separate stem or frame mounted battery but the launch of the Terra 3 marks a move towards a chunky, all-in-one unit, with the battery and light in the same casing.
The Terra 3’s 800-Lumen output puts it firmly in the war path of off-road night riding mountain bikers, while the battery life is an impressive three hours on maximum. The run time is boosted when using either of the two lower settings, with the 250-Lumen option offering a claimed nine hours of run time.
The light is operated using a small button at the back which sits above the charging port, waterproofed on the inside and protected by a rubber cap on the outside, while the unit attaches to your handlebars with a fairly standard clamp. All that makes for a promising package which will cost £150.
Electron have also breathed new life into their commuter range with the introduction of the Terra Mini, which has an output of 160 Lumens on the highest setting and, like the Terra 3, has a run time of three hours, while low and flashing modes are also offered.
Meanwhile, the White Lightning Chain Johnny caught our eye, offering a ready-made solution for riders who want to chuck the bike in the back of the car but don’t want oil and grease all over the interior. It costs £19.99 and will also prove useful when storing or working on the bike.
We also spotted a selection of new products from Blackburn, including the Slick bottle cage. It’s made from polycarbonate, which keeps the weight down to 27g – that’s only 2g more than the new Camber carbon bottle cage, plus you’re £36 better off, with the Slick retailing at £8.99, while the Camber will remove £44.99 from your wallet.
Blackburn also had two new lights on show. The Super Flea is the older brother of the existing Flea front light, boosting output from 40 Lumens to 105 Lumens. The Super Flea offers 1.5, 2.5 or 3.5 hours of battery life depending on which of the three setting you opt for, while the light can be charged by plugging it into a USB port. The Scorch front light (£45) is also new from Blackburn and, with an output of 180 Lumens, is in serious commuter territory. The torch is also USB rechargeable and offers similar run times to the Super Flea. Both lights will be available from June.
Last but not least, from Blackburn anyway, these Barrier saddlepacks are made from TPU coated nylon and, with taped seams, are highly water repellent. Micro (£14.99) and small (£19.99) options are available, both of which are super-lightweight and have reflective detailing to improve low light visibility when riding on the road.
Finally, this M:Part Frame Protection Tape is designed to keep your frame in tip-top shape. Madison had the tape on one of their bikes and, at 0.36mm thick, it’s barely visible without taking a real close look. The pliable tape is UV stable, meaning it shouldn’t discolour with age, and it’s also abrasion resistant.
