The Whyte 19 Race got a major overhaul in 2009, swapping the aluminium/carbon frame for one made completely from carbon fibre.
The £2799 Race is the middle of a three bike range. There’s the 19 C costing £2399 and the top-end 19 Works XX a whopping £3999. The three bikes use the same frame though, which weighs just 1,150g using an all-carbon construction based on technology found in the E-120, the first ever Whyte to be made completely from carbon.
Whyte haven’t been building carbon bikes for that long but this doesn’t show, the frame is immaculately finished and with massive oversized swoopy downtube and top tube it looks purposeful and race ready, and a RockShox Sid Race fork plugs into the headtube. The bottom bracket is a BB30 oversized system, into which fits an FSA Afterburner chainset. The rest of the groupset is Shimano XT with matching brakes, and wheels are Fulcrum 3’s with Continental Race King 2.1in tyres.
It looks fast sat in the Bikemagic office (against the Pantone wall), and its first test will be Mountain Mayhem next week, where hopefully it’ll be the right bike for the Mayhem course.
