Petition to save Houndkirk Moor trail in Sheffield

Ride Sheffield are calling for mountain bikers to sign a petition to help save a section of trail in the area.

The areas highlighted in red are due to be resurfaced

Sheffield City Council plans to resurface three different sections of the tracks across Houndkirk Moor.

“We will be resurfacing all three sections with locally sourced crushed gritstone and improving the drainage,” reads the council’s site notice.

“We will be placing locally sourced gritstone boulders on the track near the bridge onHoundkirk Road where it has widened througherosion to encourage visitors to keep to the maintrack.”

But Ride Sheffield claim the work will obliterate another fun section of trail and are asking for riders to lend their support to their campaign.

“This petition aims to prevent, or at the very least encourage a more sensitive approach to the planned surfacing work that is going to be done on Houndkirk and Jumbles Rd,” said Henry Norman.

“The work that is planned would appear to be that same as the work that has already been done on Houndkirk Rd. This would lead to further loss of another archetypal Peak District byway/bridleway, replacing it with a  homogenised surface.

“Not only will this detract from the natural (visual) environment, but it will also reduce the enjoyment of the byway by walkers, mountain bikers and fell runners.

“We are aware that some work needs to be done to improve drainage as well as improving access for all, but we feel that it can be done in a far more sensitive and considered manner.”
