K2’s SmartFork is still available, but we like the performance of their new air unit so much, we’re not bothered by missing out on chips and batteries.
Though they haven’t completely abandoned their SmartFork design, K2 have a new air-sprung fok fitted to their topline bikes.
This picture doesn’t really show how big the fork is – stanchions are 1.25in diameter, which gives a big air volume for a plush ride.
The usual positive and negative air springs are fitted, along with a damping mechanism that’s so nicely refined we failed to notice it until it was too late to ask how it worked.
Tracking, braking and fork action are all right up there – not quite as plush as some coil sprung forks, but for the weight they’re talking – a genuine 3lb – they work great.
