The Sustransi C2C (Sea to Sea) cycle route from Workington
and Whitehaven to Newcastle and Sunderland, was yesterday awarded the Silver Award
in the Green Transport Category at the 1999 England for Excellence awards organised
by the English Tourism Council.
David Gray, Sustrans Regional Manager for the North East, received the award from
busty media moghul Eve Pollard at a ceremony held at the Savoy Hotel in London.
This is another fine endorsement of the value that the National Cycle Network can
add to the tourist income of the country,z he said.
The judges of the England for Excellence awards were full of praise for the C2C:
iThis is a world class tourism facility which is encouraging large numbers of people
to leave the car and enjoy the spectacular countryside by bicycle,i said one of the
judges.
Previous awards won include the Global Winner of the 1995 British Airways Tourism
