It’s silly season on the snow slopes
again as all the nutters line up for Speed Week in the Alps. BicycleTrade and Industry
magazine report that Intense Cycles rider Markus Stockl is using a wind tunnel to
train for his latest record-breaking attempt, as the German rider tries to break
the mountain bike speed record of 140 miles an hour on the snow.



Stockl got Intense Cycles to create a custom aerodynamic frame and also had Austriaís
Carbo-Tech manufacture custom fairings for his downhill machine. He is using the
wind tunnel at the University of Zurich to get accustomed to the air resistance created
at high speeds.



Sponsors of the attempt include Azonic, Chris King, DT Swiss, Hayes Disc Brakes,
Intense Cycles, Intense Racing Germany, Intense Tires, Oakley, No Fear, Red Bull,
Rigida, Sapim Spokes and THE. Stockl estimates the attempt will cost some $75,000.
