You may recall that we reported on Scott’s new sub-1kg carbon fibre hardtail frame a couple of weeks ago. Well, it turns out that there’s at least one other member of the bag-of-sugar club – we had an email the other day from IR.Comp, a specialist manufacturer of carbon fibre components for the aviation and sailing industries, telling us about its IR.Comp 3.1 carbon MTB frame.
IR.Comp is based in Slovenia, also home to Elan and Remec bikes. The standard 3.1 frame is tested to DIN Plus standard, has a three-year warranty and comes in at 1.3kg (2.9lb). But UCI World Marathon Champs bronze medallist and European Marathon Champion, Blaza Klemencic has been campaigning a special Race Edition frame which comes in under the magic 1kg mark.
The frames are full monococques, laid up entirely by hand using a combination of carbon, glass fibre, S-glass and Kevlar. The 3.1 is available in two sizes, 18.5 and 15.5in. IR.Comp also makes a rather natty carbon monococque city bike…
A standard 3.1 frame will cost you 1,000 Euros, or about £660, including delivery within the EU. We imagine that IR.Comp would be delighted to hear from any interested UK dealers. More details at www.ircomp.com.
