A cracking weekend of racing in the first 2011 UCI World Cup DH meet in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa for Trek World Racing as the team scored wins in both the men’s and women’s finals with Aaron Gwin and Tracy Moseley respectively.
The win by Aaron Gwin marks the first win for a US rider since 1999 (answers in the forum for who that rider was) and Gwin’s first ever World Cup win since he appeared on the world scene in 2008.
It didn’t start off that great so, but after qualifying a lowly 7th he clearly found some time on the course (helped too by spending some time fettling his bike) to storm to a resounding victory ahead of Greg Minnaar and Gee Atherton in second and third respectively.
Steve Peat looked good for a win early on, setting a blistering pace early on. The first rider to post a sub-4:15 time, until Aaron knocked a staggering seven seconds off the best time. Minnaar came close though, just 0.241 adrift.
