This year was Peaty’s 20th mountain bike world championships and this episode of This Is Peaty follows him through the event from getting his bike and shoes custom-painted, through practice in the rain, to a race run scuppered by a crash in the final chute after being 1.8seconds up at the split.

Grab a coffee and settle down for 10 minutes with the man, the legend, Steve Peat.

New movie from the makers of New World Disorder series

New freeride film Where the Trail Ends has its world premiere at the Interbike show in Las Vegas on the evening of September 19. UK insomniacs can watch it live and for free over the Interwebs at 4.30 am on Thursday September 20.

Can’t drag yourself out of bed that early? It’ll be available for 24 hours at Red Bull’s Where The Trail Ends site.

Where The Trail Ends follows Darren Berrecloth, Cameron Zink, Kurt Sorge, James Doerfling, Andreu Lacondeguy and half a dozen others on a three-year trip all over the world in search of spectacular locations and what we believe the kids call ‘sick lines’.

A 4.5 minute trailer was released a few weeks ago:

Locations include the Andean foothills of Salta, Argentina, China’s Gobi Desert, Nepal’s near-secret Mustang region, British Columbia’s Fraser River and Virgin, Utah, areas producer Freeride Entertainment calls “big mountain freeriding’s punishing proving grounds and birthplace.”

The film-makers followed the riders using jet boats, helicopters and fixed wing aircraft, and mounted Contour HD video cameras on the riders themselves, using “the most advanced filmmaking and sound equipment ever used in this genre.”

“The experience of making the film is something viewers will see first-hand. It’s the story of what it took to get there. And what it was like to experience the ultimate ride,” says Darren Berrecloth. “We went into regions almost entirely unknown. And we often never knew whether we’d succeed or fail, or worse.”

What makes a legendary mountain bike builder and designer tick?

A legend of mountain biking, Tom Ritchey built some of the very first frames for Gary Fisher’s original mountain bike company and was one of the first ten people inducted into the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame.

Tom Ritchey works on a frame.

Now, Ritchey has his own eponymous company and still makes frames, along with a huge line of components.

In this video, Ritchey talks about how he got into cycling, riding with his father and discovering while very young that he was quick enough on the bike to drop his dad. He quickly got into racing and into building his own bikes while still in high school.

When Gary Fisher needed custom frames for those early bikes, Ritchey was perfectly positioned to supply them. Not only was he adept with a brazing torch, but he had mastered the lugless brazing techniques needed for over-sized tubes, and he was able to turn the job around quickly.

The rest is history, and here it is in Ritchey’s own words.

Downhiller, mountain biker and crosser explains what makes her tick

To promote its new line of on-bike racks and panniers, roof rack and luggage maker Thule has commissioned a series of videos - The Way I Roll – featuring significant bike riders, and there’s quite a bit of dirt riding in them.

Nicole Duke hosts a bee in ‘The Way I Roll’

Beautifully shot by film-maker Peter Sutherland, the short films cover a range of aspects of bike culture, through the lives and thoughts of six riders, kicking off with downhiller Chris Van Dine, cyclo-crosser Nicole Duke, alley cat racing videographer Lucas Brunelle, and BMXer and skater Sal Barbier. There are two more still to be released, featuring fixie entrepreneur and rock drummer Gina Marie Scardino and framebuilder Seth Rosko.

But these aren’t your regular high-octane fast riding and stunt videos. Van Dine talks about his work with Pedals for Progress, which donates bikes to people in the developing world. Nicole Duke reflects on her journey from downhill racer to cyclo-crosser and mum. Brunelle explains what he’s trying to do with his videos and his life, while Barbier shows off his collection of BMXes, picked up by being the ‘Bidminator’ in the early days of eBay.

We especially like the Duke and van Dine videos, riders who come across as having a bit more to them than the usual driven training junkie. Here’s Nicole Duke:

The bags Thule is very subtly plugging here (seriously, blink and you’ll miss them) are from the new Pack ‘n’ Pedal range. This is a system featuring racks that strap to just about any frame and bags held in place with a combination of conventional hooks and rare earth magnets. The hooks fold away into the bag, so the bag is snag-free off the bike.

Check out the gallery for a couple of official snaps, and if you’re as much as a bag nerd as I am, there’s more at Thule’s Facebook page.

The whole series of videos can be found on its YouTube page.

A new edit dedicated to the best of man's best friends. Have you got a trail dog too?

Got a trail dog? Then you’ll love this.

August 26 is US National Dog Day and in celebration of our four-legged friends here’s Jessee Maule of Projekt Roam exercising her dogs in the best way there is, by keeping up with them on a mountain bike.

Colt and Jessee Maule with very energetic pooch.

Why have we stopped eh? Eh? Eh?

Jessee has this to say about why she and husband C0lt made this four-minute edit, filmed in the woods of Oregon:

“Haven’t you ever wondered what your dog was dreaming about as you observe their paws twitching while they sleep? Well, I’m not entirely sure what they dream about, but I do know that every time I grab my bike and whistle for the dogs, they give me a look that says it all. “It’s about damn time I found the means to keep up with them”.

“Call me biased like any parent, but I for one, feel as if I am the luckiest person in the world to be able to share my heart and home with two of the best dogs on Earth.

“So remember to take a moment every once in a while to let your canine companion know how elated you are to have them in your life.”
