Say 'boo' to the recession and ask your rich uncle for one of our luxury selections

What do you get the mountain biker in your life if money is no object? Here’s a few things we’re hoping our rich eccentric uncle will put in our stockings this Christmas.

One (chain)ring to rule them all: SRAM’s single-ring-minded XX1 chainset.

SRAM XX1 group

SRAM’s Olympic gold medal winning 11-speed, single chainring transmission is the most single-minded go-faster gearing system ever created for mountain biking. By losing the complication of a front derailleur and double or triple rings, SRAM reduces the number of things that can go wrong, while a wide-range set of 11 sprockets out back provides race-ready gearing.

You don’t get super-low gears but you aren’t going to win any races by winching up hills in 22/34 anyway.

Up close and personal with SRAM XX1

Exposure’s new Reflex light is a genuine advance in light usability.

Exposure Reflex front light

At £450 it’s not quite the most expensive light around, but with self-regulating electronics that dim its three LEDs when you slow down it’s definitely the cleverest.

That functionality means that you’ll usually get three hours of full power out of a charge instead of just two, and the ten other modes on offer give you up to 36 hours of run time. Best of all, the LED display on the back tells you exactly how much light you have left, so you know when it’s time to head home.

Shimano XTR Trail pedals

Sure, you could ask for the Deore XT equivalent, which are only a tad heavier and less nicely-finished, but their hollow axles, top-quality bearings and non-stick finish make the Shimano XTR trail pedals the Bugatti of clipless pedals. Shop around a bit for a deal, and they’re even an affordable luxury.

Enve AM carbon fibre rims

If you genuinely want to save weight, your wheels are the best place to start, even though the old claim that weight on the wheels counts double isn’t quite true. As well as saving static and rotating mass, lighter wheels also reduce your bike’s unsprung mass, which can make your suspension work better. Triple win!

But very light aluminium rims are flexible and fragile. Enter carbon fibre – is there anything it can’t do? Carbon rims are stiffer and stronger than equivalent aluminium rims, the best of them even shrugging off the near-abuse that is downhill racing. Enve made the first rims to win a downhill World Cup, and the AM rims are the all-round incarnation of that technology.

Brilliantly practical as well as great-looking, the Lezyne CNC Dirt Floor Drive pushes a large volume of air per stroke, so it’s quick to get a mountain bike tyre up to pressure.
Lezyne’s threaded chuck is unusual, but really practical as it holds and seals well, without requiring you to fight with a quick-release lever. If you’re in a hurry, a slip-on Presta chuck is included.

Every mountain biking bloke and blokess needs a shed. Asgard’s Large cycle shed is exactly what it says on the tin, a three-metre long steel box to protect your rides from the elements and deter the light-fingered from nicking them. There’s room here for several bikes, or, if you can resist the constant siren song of N+1, a couple and room to work on them.

It weighs a third of a tonne and needs a flat concrete base, so this is a serious invstment in storage, but surely your ikes are worth it? We’d be tempted to combine it with a Pragmasis metal shed shackle or ground anchor for ultimate security.

German brand adds lightweight hardtail to 2013 range

Cube have added another 29er to their 2013 range, with the Elite XX1 29 described by the German brand as a “superlight hardtail which is perfect for XC and marathon races”.

The Super HPC carbon frame has gone on a diet, with excess resin material removed, and that makes for a lightweight machine with an overall claimed weight of 9.1kg.

Cube say the Elite XX1 29 delivers the “optimum stiffness to weight ratio” thanks to a tapered headtube, oversized tube profiles and PressFit bottom bracket.

The Elite XX1 29 is, as the name suggests, equipped with SRAM’s new XX1 groupset, which has a 34-tooth single chainring working in partnership with a huge 10-42t cassette.

Otherwise the Elite XX1 29 is equipped with DT Swiss MA 2.0 29 wheels wrapped in Schwalbe Racing Ralph Kevlar 2.25 tyres, Formula R1R disc brakes, a RockShox SID RL 29 fork with 100mm of travel, a Syntace F109 stem and Selle Italia X1 saddle.

The Elite XX1 will retail for £3,499 when it becomes available in spring 2013.

What leaps out at you is that really freaking huge big sprocket. It is quite frankly e-bloody-normous.

To put it in gear-weenie historial context, this is the biggest rear sprocket that we’re aware of ever being offered commercially. The previous record was held by SunTour, the derailleur company that went bust in the early 1990s not today’s fork maker.

To make room for the 10-tooth top sprocket, the XX1 freehub body only has splines at the base, so the cassette matches. It’s hard to get a handle on just how huge that sprocket is till you hold it in your hand.

SunTour made a screw-on freewheel with a 38-tooth large sprocket back in the 80s, and Richard and Nicholas ‘Coast’ Crane used them when they rode mountain bikes up Kilimanjaro in 1985.

The Cranes were after a super-low bottom gear so used their enormo-sprockets with triple chainrings.

SRAM’s aim here is to give as wide a spread of gears as possible with just one chainring, so there’s a tiny 10-tooth sprocket at the other end. That gives a 420 percent range, less than the 618 percent of a 44/32/22 triple with an 11-34 cassette, but plenty for racers and fit trail riders.

Compared to the crude protos SRAM were showing a short while ago, the production XX1 rear derailleur is a sleek and polished item of loveliness.

Chainrings to fit the XX1 chainset will be available in two-tooth increments from 28 to 38, and we’re willing to bet fans of 2 x 10 systems will be experimenting with 2 x 11 to get fuss-free wide-range gears within minutes of XX1 hitting the shops in October.

For example, combine a 40/26 chainset with the XX1 cassette and you’d have a 646 percent range with a lower bottom gear than a classic triple. We haven’t asked SRAM if they’d approve, but we’re willing to bet they wouldn’t.
