One of the more radical products we spotted at the recent Interbike trade show was the production version of Reynolds’s Topo carbon fibre MTB wheels. They’re part of an extended and enhanced product line that goes along with the rebranding of the company to Reynolds Cycling.
The Topo uses hand-made 100% unidirectional carbon fibre rims laced to DT Swiss 240S hubs with 28 DT Revolution spokes, three-cross at each end. The clincher version weighs in at an impressive 1,588g per set, while the tubular version is even lighter at 1,352g per set. The Topo will be the main point of interest for the mountain biker, but road riders will find much to tempt them in the new range – a 300gm carbon fork, variouscarbon rims and what’s described as an “aggressively priced” full carbon wheelset.
But never mind all that, we’re sure that there are plenty of people itching to get their hands on a set of the MTB wheels, which look really quite trick (if we may be permitted to revive a bit of early-90s bikespeak for moment). The good news is that the full Reynolds Cycling range will shortly be available from the good people at Upgrade Bikes, which has been appointed as the exclusive aftermarket distributor. Upgrade expects to have good stock by early January 2007, so start badgering your local bike shop now…
