Bikemagic Trail Guide: Wharncliffe Woods, Sheffield, Yorkshire

Destination: Wharncliffe Woods, Sheffield, Yorkshire

An iconic mountain biking location as it was through Wharncliffe’s gloop and roots that former downhill world champion Steve Peat honed his skills. It’s a shame, then, that the future of riding there is still in the balance but hopefully, with the heroic folk of SingletrAction now involved, good things are in store.

How to get there

Wharncliffe Woods are on the north-west side of Sheffield near to the village of Grenoside and on the left of the minor road that runs between Grenoside and Wortley. Turn west off the A61 at Grenoside, then north on the road to Wortley.

Sat Nav: Grenoside

Facilities: Car park and a number of pubs and chip shops in Grenoside.

Trails

The old 16km red XC loop is currently in pieces. You can still cobble together a decent ride in dry conditions – forget it in the wet – by heading out of the car park and following your nose but, if XC is your thing, you’re better heading out onto Blacka Moor and riding some of the local natural trails.

Downhill is what Wharncliffe is know for though and there are lines everywhere. Tapping some local knowledge is your best bet or explore with caution. Many are steep and highly technical with features that demand commitment and, in the wet, all are very muddy. You’ve also got plenty more trails to explore in Grenoside Woods.
