SIZE="2" FACE="Arial">Airborne Flying Aces John Stamstad and Patrick Irwin are traipsing
to Alaska for the Iditasport Extreme (IE), a grueling 350-mile race from Knik to
McGrath beginning Feb. 26, 2000. Stamstad is the reigning five-time champ, while
Irwin is making his IE debut (on his Airborne Sky Hag singlespeed, no less).

Stamstad, 34, is looking to make it six in a row in Alaska. He set the fastest time
(3 days, 8 hours, 15 minutes) in 1998. He’s also chosen to extend his effort into
Nome. Only 10 human-powered athletes have ever completed the entire 1,100 miles.
Irwin, 33, is also considering the challenge into Nome. The Sewaunee, Tennessee resident
is also racing the "shorter" Iditasport 100, which runs on the Iditarod
Trail beginning Feb. 19. Bike, ski, snowshoe, and foot divisions go head-to-head.
