Mountain bike veteran Nick Craig (Scott) finished second, while former road pro Dan Fleeman (Cycleshack/Forme Coaching) completed the podium.

Jane Nuessli won the women’s race with an emphatic margin over Rachel Fenton, while third place went to Verity Appleyard.

“Highlights of the race were the scenery in general and the sections of trail centre singletrack at Innerleithen, part of the renowned 7Stanes network,” the organisers told us. “This part of the Scottish Borders is stunning, with rolling hills as far as the eye can see, gorse in full golden flower, and a superbly remote feeling.”

The championships formed part of the Chain Reaction Cycles MTB Marathon Series weekend, with the second round of the series taking place just after the race.

The second round of the CRC MTB Marathon Series followed after the main race

The first rider on the mini marathon course made it over the line in just under an hour and twenty minutes while the last rider on the 88km full marathon took eight hours and 27 minutes to complete the challenging route.

The next round of the CRC MTB Marathon Series will take place in Marshbrook, Shropshire, on Sunday July 15. See www.mtb-marathon.co.uk for more details.
