Gerard Vroomen, co-founder of premium road cycle brand Cervélo, is to move into mountain bikes with former BMC CEO Andy Kessler.

The move, revealed by Velonews this week, marks an interesting change of direction for the man responsible for one of the most inconic and successful road brands in the past decade, with a slew of professional race wins and Tour de France stage victories.

Details are vague at the moment, with Vroomen saying only that “Andy Kessler and I are looking into doing something in mountain biking, not exactly sure what yet.”

This follows the news of Cervélo agreeing to a financing arrangement with Dutch corporation Pon, who also Derby Cycle Werke, the group that runs Raleigh and Focus.

While details of what this means, and any advance on what sort of bikes we can expect, what we can envisage is some technological advanced designs that Cervélo is synonymous with in the road cycling world.

More on this story when we get it.
