Guessing you're not used to the general weather conditions in most of the UK then?!

Cold and wet is the default weather most of the time and snow is a fun short lived playtime.

Sorry if our definition isn't hard enough for your but hey, if you will read a UK based website, you'll get UK based information.

Where in the world exactly you guys were planning to use 'that' set up for winter biking? I mean, winter is like MINUS 10 to 30 degrees, snowing and naturally snow everywhere. No stud tires?, no layer dressing?, perhaps a real winter pants rather than rainproof shorts :D
This whole article is a joke. Who ever wrote it should not use a word winter on topic or anywhere else on this page. It's all spring to fall stuff. Only thing that what is correct is a proper headlight.

For motivation I would strongly recommend a route tracking system such as strava (FREE for basic donwload) or the like, all you need is a GPS enabled smartphone or GPS device (garmin, et al) and away you go. Works really well and even seems to pick up in wooded areas. Nothing more pleasing than seeing you've beaten your mates time on a section and the thought all you need to get faster on the same route is a dry summer! I'm ever hopeful for one of these ;-)
